Piece of Berlin Wall inaugurated at Berlaymont
On the esplanade in front of Brussels' Berlaymont building on Monday, a piece of the Berlin Wall was inaugurated with the effigy of former US President John F. Kennedy. The “Kennedy piece” commemorates the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Germany. The inauguration was attended by the German finance minister, Wolfgang Schäuble.
Several sections of Wall were displayed on Place du Luxembourg in 2009. Today, three of them still remain in Brussels. The Kennedy piece, which was for several years in the hands of the European Commission, is being called "a symbol of an enlarged and united Europe". On the recently restored section, President Kennedy is seen in front of an American flag background.
Another piece has been on display at Parc Léopold since 2009, and the third piece can be viewed at the visitors' entrance to the European Parliament.
