Petition to save the trees on Parvis de Saint-Gilles

12:30 26/10/2015

Residents of Saint-Gilles have launched a petition to preserve the trees on the Parvis de Saint-Gilles, a popular square in front of the church at the heart of the Brussels commune. The removal of the trees is included as part of the restructuring plan for the square.

Saint-Gilles hired landscape architect Bas Smets to implement his design of a new square made up of various levels of blue stone, according to brusselnieuws.be. Smets' plan calls for the removal of all of the square's trees (except for one), prompting local residents, shoppers and visitors to start a petition in protest.

The Parvis de Saint-Gilles is one of the rare places in Brussels where people can sit out and rejoice whenever the weather permits. The trees are crucial to the ambiance. What in HELL do we need blue stones to replace a charming, authentic meeting place of young and old, foreign and native who enjoy sitting outdoors in sight of and under the trees?
It might be interesting to know who is being paid to provide this totally unnecessary substitution for what is already a fine place to be.
