Permanent resident after 5 years?
Question
I'm non-EU and have been living here for 5 years. I'm wondering if I can apply to be a permanent resident now? What are the steps involved--do I just go to the commune, or do I make an appointment? What kind of proof do I need to show? And, how long does it normally take to become a resident? Finally, if resident status is granted, am I able to work here without a work permit? If anyone can help answer any of these questions, I would appreciate it! Thank you!

Dear Sir/Madam,
I came to Belgium for 1 year master programme in sept-2007 and then I finished my PhD also in Belgium. In total my stay in Belgium becomes 6 completed years. Now, I am having unlimited full-time contract but they issued 1 year B-Card. I recently been to commune to apply Nationality, they mentioned that "My stay is so far as student and I need to have 5 yrs continuous card to ask for Nationality". They also mentioned " my stay for all these years is not considered for nationality application. Even though I am having all these years stay and unlimited work contract. FYI, I am having N2 dutch language certificate as well.
Please advice me on this issue.
Thanks.
Few points I missed in above was I am with non-EU nationality.
Thank you.
Hello All
I faced almost the similar situation as mentioned by RVSL. I have been living and working here since 2009, since then i got A card(1yr) for 4 consecutive years and then in 2014 received my B card(5 yrs). I also have NT1.2 as social integration and economic contribution as full time work since 2009. When my B card been checked by the local commune registrar, she said issued A cards each year till 2014 wont be calculated as your continuous stay and therefore you need to wait another five years (upto 2019) to apply for the citizenship.
Worth to mention that i satisfy the conditions of Objectif (www.allrights.be) website 12 bis 1.2.
Please share some ideas why they are saying this?
Thanks all
