Parking certificate or parking for rent

Question

Hello,

I've just got a car with a German number plate (and would like to keep it) - could I get the residential parking permit from my commune in Brussels? Or do I always have to change the registration to the Belgium one?

If the later is the case, could you please advise on any low cost private (outside) parking (even at the edge of the city if reachable by metro or so, I will use the car only on weekends)?

Many thanks.

J

You say:
"my commune in Brussels"
Implying you live, and are registered here.

You can NOT drive a foreign registered car. The second you do 1m in it, it becomes liable for Belgian registration tax/duty, and if you've not paid it yet, the car will be immobilised until you do + pay €250 fine.

So register the car, and get a standard residents parking permit, and your problem is solved.

Unless you happen to be a student who is enrolled in an educational establishment in Belgium. See http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/vehicles/registration/taxes/index_e... for a "sample story", incidentally concerning Belgium.

The critical question is whether your insurers - presumably in Germany - are aware that the car is, in reality, kept in Belgium. If not, you should inform them and take their advice. You do not want to find, should you have an insurance claim, that they refuse to pay out - in other words that you are not insured which is a criminal offence. Insurers LOVE to have a reason not to pay out!

Many thanks for all your comments.

Just to clarify, yes, I live here but I am NOT registered with the commune (I have a special ID). The car has (in fact, only will have) a German registration and German insurance.

I wonder about the 6 months exception (as per the link above) - I never had a car before and even this one I intent to bring here only temporarily (i.e. for less than 6 months as it would normally be used in Germany where my partner lives). Could I do that? Or because I already live here (for more than 6 months), no matter what, as soon as I cross the boarder with the car I might get it "immobilised" and fined?? In other words, since I live here I cannot legally drive any car but one registered here? That would mean I also cannot borrow a car from my friends in Luxembourg and drive it in Belgium? And what about all those cars with NL, L, PL etc. number plates parking in front of the buildings here (for surely longer than a few days)?

Sorry for the additional questions, however, it seems more absurd than clear to me...
Cheers!

Still, if I manage to solve the legal issue, does anybody know about the low cost parking?

So, when I am student enrolled at belgium Uni, and my car is registered in different EU country, I can use it here in Belgium without registration for another 3 years? (I am PhD student)
And what about parking permit? I am already registered at Brussels Commune. Can I ask there also for the parking permit which allows me to park in the city?

Thanks
