Over 13,000 Belgian OAPs without state pension

11:44 25/09/2013

Pensions minister Alexander De Croo has revealed that records from his department show that 13,638 Belgians aged over 65 have never applied for a state pension, the SudPresse newspapers report today. More than half of them live in Flanders. Of these 13,638 people, nearly 4,400 are in their sixties, more than 6,000 are in their seventies, 2,200 in their eighties and just under 800 in their nineties. A further  fifteen centenarians (ten in Wallonia, four in Flanders and one in Brussels) have also never received a state pension when, having previously been in employment in Belgium they were in fact entitled to one.
