One in five pedestrians crosses on red

22:58 16/03/2015

More than 20% of pedestrians in Belgium cross the street when the signal is red, thereby endangering their safety, according to a study carried out by the Belgian Road Safety Institute (IBSR) in Brussels and eight other Belgian cities, reports brusselnieuws.be.

IBSR collected the data at the end of 2014 from more than 1,320 observation points in Antwerp, Mons, Bruges, Brussels, Charleroi, Ghent, Leuven, Liège and Namur. The Institute performed the study in order to find an explanation for the increase in the number of pedestrians involved in fatal accidents in recent years, up from 10.5% to 13% of all traffic fatalities between 2008 and 2014.

IBSR is therefore urging policymakers to continue to raise awareness around the problem, and to carry out a thorough evaluation of pedestrian crossings.

Quite possibly when this 20% or so crossed the road, there was not a car in sight and so safe to do so. Is it being suggested that people should never ever cross the road when the lights are red? This is just mind control.. And to what do the percentages refer? Is it that 13% of pedestrians were knocked down last year? Sounds doubtful.
