One in 50 households has too much lead in drinking water

12:23 10/06/2015

Figures from environment minister Joke Schauvliege (CD&V) show that one in 50 Flemish households has too much lead in the drinking water. While the last lead pipes in the public network are set to be replaced this year, the minister warns that some houses are also due for a renewal, writes De Standaard.

Lead is a toxic substance that can cause damage to the central nervous system, and is especially dangerous for children and pregnant women.

The Flemish government will therefore next week launch a campaign to inform the public of the dangers of lead in the drinking water, including tips to help people identify old lead pipes in their home. The campaign also aims to dispel a few myths about lead, such as the myth that water filters help to remove lead.

For those who are not immediately able to replace their pipes, the Flemish Environment Agency (VMM) recommends using bottled water.
