Setting up as an independent

Question

Can anyone advise where to go for information for setting up as an independent worker. Is there a status for independents that will not be bringing in a high income, more like a hobby that just pays a little ? I do not work elsewhere.

If you live in Brussels, you can go to Xerius to register, or to get information. It is near Botanique and you can look up the address. Or go to any "guichet d'entreprise" wherever you are.
In brief, it works OK for small income if you are doing it as a second job because the minimum social security payments are about 70 euros a month (regardless of whether you have any income). But if it will be your primary job then the minimum will be in excess of 200 € a month and perhaps closer to 250.

You can do it but....
The Belgian system is quite clever in that it discourages people from setting up as an independent unless they are setting up a real business. It’s designed to discourage part timers taking business from those who depend on it to make a living.
Talk to an accountant. It should be free for an initial consultation. Talk to someone like Partena. Again free for the first meeting.
