Brussels square to be named in honour of Jo Cox

21:34 27/08/2018

A square in downtown Brussels will be named in honour of murdered British member of parliament Jo Cox, who spent several years living and working in the city.

Jo Cox Square will be found just behind the Ancienne Belgique concert hall - "a place she visited often", said Mohamed Ouriaghli, Brussels city councillor for equality. The name plaque will be unveiled on 27 September at 13.00.

"This inauguration is in her honour and is part of a wish to give more women's names to squares and streets in the City of Brussels," Ouriaghli said.

Cox, who was the Labour MP for Birstall in West Yorkshire, had strong connections to Brussels and many friends here, having worked as an assistant to Glenys Kinnock MEP and at Oxfam International.

She was shot and stabbed in her constituency in June 2016, just a week before the UK's referendum on its membership of the EU.
