Almost 400 fined in Flagey midnight drinking ban

Almost 400 people have been hit with on-the-spot fines since a midnight drinking ban was introduced around Place Flagey in Ixelles two months ago.

Since 15 March, the ban on drinking alcohol in public was brought forward from 2.00 to midnight around the Ixelles Ponds, Place-Sainte-Croix and the Rue du Belvédère behind the Flagey building. Cafes in the area must close their terraces at 1.00.

Ixelles mayor Dominique Dufourny said 377 administrative fines of €80 had been issued so far. In the first two weeks of the ban, offenders were given a warning.

New signs will now be put up in the neighbourhood reminding people to be quiet when leaving bars and restaurants.

"The never-ending challenge we have is to maintain a balance between supporting businesses in this popular nightspot and ensuring a peaceful and respectful living environment for local residents," Dufourny said.
