Radiator half hot and half cold

Question

Perhaps someone can shed on this before I call a technician. If the heat is on in the living downstairs but radiators upstairs are closed, the radiators in the living room are hot at entry point and warm at exit. If radiaators are open in living and in bedroom upstairs, bedroom radiator is all hot but in living only hot along top third and cold in the bottom two thirds. The circulation pump has several adjustments for auto, constant pressure and constant power, and chenging this doessn't have an effect. Any suggestions?

J

Not enough water pressure in the system. Let more water in, and let air out of the radiators.

Thanks J. I'll do that.

But wouldn't air in the radiator mean cool on top and hot on bottom?

See this UK site for explanation: http://www.gas-guide.org.uk/trapped-air.html same applies here

Bleeding the radiators won't cost you anything, and it's an easy and quick thing to do. So if the problem is something different, at least you've ruled out one possibility of what it isn't.

Bled them and and no good. Most likely it is sludge. Surprisingly, the landlord said he'll send someone over. Thank you all

Did you try taking off the temperature adjusting knob and tapping the valve gently with a hammer until it pops out, as it may be stuck. I have to do this all the time with some of my radiators as they get warm at the top but not at the bottom.

System needs balancing by the sound this is something a good plumber should be able to do for you. Also here there is sometimes lots of gunk in systems, so they might need to flush it out. Good luck
