16,000 Belgians declare foreign investments

11:00 31/07/2013
So far, exactly 15,622 Belgians have reported in their tax returns through tax-on-web that they have a foreign investment-linked insurance, reports Flemish daily newspaper De Standaard today.

In the Belgian government's ongoing stride against money laundering, it is the first year that such an insurance is to be reported (while reporting funds on foreign bank accounts has already been a requirement for years). Final figures are not in yet, but according to Finance Ministry spokeswoman Florence Angelici, some 2.68 million tax returns have been logged so far through tax-on-web. Those using an accountant or tax specialist to help them file have until October 16, which means the number of reported foreign investment-linked insurances is expected to increase significantly.

Again, what does this mean? This is as helpful as the French tax article! Are Belgians not allowed to invest out of Belgium or what?
