Win tickets to ‘Gricel – A Tango Story’ musical theatre in Brussels on 8 April
Argentine Tango meets modern dance in the musical theatre production of Gricel – A Tango Story in Brussels on 8 April.
This world premiere features live music, world-class performers and 20 artists on stage.
Created by award-winning choreographer Astria Apel, the work tells the true and moving story of the passionate and tragic love between Gricel and the renowned Argentine tango poet José María Contursi.
Through an innovative fusion of tango, modern dance, live music and singing, the production immerses the audience into the bittersweet world of longing, which is at the heart of Tango Argentino.
In Gricel – A Tango Story, for the first time, the powerful movement language of the Martha Graham technique, the foundation of modern dance, dialogues with Tango Argentino.
While remaining distinct, there are some striking artistic and technical parallels between the two dance forms. Both styles share emotional depth, dynamic contrast and movement initiated from the body’s core.

As 2026 is the 100th anniversary of the renowned Martha Graham Dance Company of New York, one of the principal roles will be performed by Christine Dakin, legendary former principal dancer and artistic director of the Martha Graham Dance Company.
New musical compositions and arrangements, based on original texts by José María Contursi, have been created specifically for this project by internationally acclaimed Argentine musicians Duo Sonder. The choreography was developed collaboratively by Astria Apel and famed Tango Argentino artist Mariano Galeano.
Inspired by Contursi’s poetic legacy, the work explores universal and timeless human themes such as love and longing, betrayal and jealousy, deep friendship, responsibility, the impact of childhood trauma and the role of the subconscious.
The performance is preceded by a Milonga (tango social) with drinks, starting at 18.00, and open to dancers and non-dancers alike. After the show, there is a ‘meet the artists’ opportunity in the foyer. The production is suitable for all audiences and recommended from age 6.
The production is staged by a German nonprofit association that promotes art and culture, with a particular focus on Tango Argentino.
