Schuman roundabout works to be finished by autumn

10:33 06/03/2026

Work on the Schuman roundabout in the heart of the European quarter in Brussels is expected to be completed in the autumn, it has been confirmed.

Bernard Quintin, the minister responsible for regional building agency Beliris, confirmed that the canopy had been scrapped from the plans, saving time and an estimated €13 million.

Beliris is completing the redevelopment of the square with a budget reallocated to road redevelopment.

“For the part financed by the Recovery and Resilience Facility [the EU's post-Covid plan], the June 2026 deadline should be met for the objectives adapted during the works,” Quintin said.

“I am keen to ensure that we can define a high-quality development that respects the specific characteristics and location.”

Also helping to wrap up works is the fact that buses will not be routed through the roundabout after all. Brussels public transport operator Stib will make the current bus route diversions permanent due to technical issues with the planned retractable bollards.

The renovated car-free square will therefore no longer include a special area for public transport.
