BNP Paribas Fortis card payment glitch sees thousands of customers over-charged
A technical problem at BNP Paribas Fortis bank has resulted in certain customers being charged multiple times for card payments.
An estimated 40,000 transactions were affected, but the total amount remains unknown.
The bank has confirmed the problem and said that a solution was being worked on.
The internal IT incident has led to some customers seeing old payments debited from their accounts again, pushing them into unauthorised overdrafts.
Spokesperson Hilde Junius said the incident affects several in-store payments, cash withdrawals and recurring monthly payments, such as subscriptions, dating from 1, 2 or 3 February.
These payments were debited twice or more due to this IT incident, and according to the spokesperson, the amounts can vary considerably.
One customer told Het Laatste Nieuws that more than €2,000 had been debited from their account.
The bank apologised for the inconvenience and said it was working to find a solution as quickly as possible.
“Affected customers do not need to take any action,” Junius said.
