Boulevard du Midi gets major clean-up
A major clean-up operation has been was carried out on Boulevard du Midi in Brussels - a site that has become popular for illegal dumping.
The operation was jointly organised by the City of Brussels’ sanitation department and regional agency Bruxelles-Propreté.
The two agencies used 16 vehicles and deployed 36 workers to remove illegally dumped litter, including furniture and bags of rubbish.
Enforcement officers are now trying to identify the offenders so that they can be punished. This is often done by searching the rubbish for identifying information, such as discarded mail or papers.
In order to improve the cleanliness of the road in the long term, vans will no longer be allowed to park on the central reservation.
Brussels-City noted that this area “has long been misused by vans, often from outside Brussels, to dump their bulky waste” and that “this affects the quality of life of local residents and also deprives them of valuable parking spaces”.
The signage has been adapted accordingly and an alternative car park has been set up near Avenue Louise for local traders who were parking there in good faith.
“This section of Boulevard du Midi suffered from particularly chaotic parking, making enforcement difficult and the situation unclear,” said Brussels mobility alderman Anaïs Maes.
“This joint action clarifies the use of public space and creates a clear and secure environment in which our officers can carry out their enforcement duties in good conditions.”
