New video footage of third airport bomber
The federal prosecutor in charge of the investigation into the bombings at Brussels Airport and in the Maalbeek metro station on 22 March has issued a new appeal to trace the identity of the third airport bomber, the man in the hat and raincoat.
The man, who failed to detonate his bomb and instead fled the scene, has been tracked using security camera footage and can be seen travelling on foot from the airport to Schaerbeek.
In the weeks since the attacks, police have gathered footage, still and video, from private businesses along the route the man followed. He leaves the airport terminal, still wearing his light-coloured raincoat and fisherman-style hat, amid the commotion following the two explosions. He passes the Sheraton Hotel and exits the grounds of the airport via the Avis car park.
He then walks into the centre of Zaventem and follows Grote Daalstraat to Leuvensesteenweg. At some point, he gets rid of the jacket – which has not yet been found – and can be seen wearing a light blue shirt with dark blue elbow patches.
He continues to Place Meiser and Place Dailly in Schaerbeek before the trace of him is lost at the corner of Avenue de la Brabançonne and Rue des Confédérés. His journey, all on foot, took two hours, from 7.58 when the bombs went off at the airport until 9.50, when he vanishes from view.
Anyone who may have seen the man or who may have any information regarding his identity or whereabouts to contact the federal police at 0800 30 300 or opsporingen@police.belgium.eu. They are also interested in recovering the raincoat he disposed of, which may be able to provide DNA evidence.
