New food market for European quarter this spring

13:55 12/01/2021

Good news for Eurocrats, and anyone living in the European quarter: A new food market is coming to Square Marguerite, next to the Ambiorix park.

The open-air market will be dedicated to organic and locally sourced products and is set to launch in April. Three retail associations represented in the neighbourhood have been asking for an outdoor market for some time, as existing markets have pulled up stakes over the years.

“Both residents and merchants have been asking for a market to be organised,” Brussels-City councillor Fabian Maingain (Défi) told Bruzz. “We wanted to launch it last year, in fact, but corona had other ideas.”

The plan is for the market to take place on the square on Wednesdays from 11.00 to 19.00 and offer an after-work atmosphere. Besides organic and local produce, stand holders should be dedicated to minimal or no packaging.

Maingain said that they hope to start with about a dozen stands. “That depends on how many traders request a space, of course.”
