Nearly 8% of seniors fail driving test

12:55 11/08/2014

Last year, 126 of the 1,800 people over the age of 65 who participated in a driving test failed the test and had to hand in their license, or about 7 to 8%, writes De Tijd, according to the annual report of the Belgian Institute for Road Safety (BIVV).

The driving test, which consists of psychological and medical tests, is not mandatory. "The seniors are taking part at the request of their doctor, their insurance company or their children who want to make sure their parents are still able to drive safely," says Karin Genoe of BIVV.

This is one of those useless statistics, It doesn't explain what percentage of people over 65 didn't do the test and are still dangerous. So it's 7% of participants, but how many is that in real terms? Because it's not mandatory who know how many unsafe drivers over this age there still are out there. Maybe this is high percentage because people who have problems are referred or maybe it reflects the ability. Unless it's put in absolute terms it's not meaningful.
