Moving to the UK

Question

My wife and I are moving back to the UK. I am British, she is an english speaking Belgian. Will she need any form of permit to work in the UK? How do we 'register' in the UK seeing as they have no ID system? Any other info we should know? TIA, and enjoy the sunshine everybody!

She will probably need to get a National Insurance number.

She'll need an NHS number too to get access to more than emergency NHS care. Here's a link.

One piece of bureaucracy that you may not have anticipated is that it can be VERY difficult to open a bank account because, in the absence of any official identity system, utility bills have become the normal means of verifying where you live, and, as newcomers, you won't have any utility bills.

If you already have a UK bank account you will be spared this particular hassle, if you haven't be warned, and don't close your Belgian account(s) until you are absolutely certain you won't need them again.
