More schools offer subjects in English

15:04 22/05/2016

From 1 September this year, 19 new schools join the list of Flemish schools authorised to offer some courses in French, English or German, bringing the total number up to 60, writes De Zondag.

The schools adhere to the methodology Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), which refers to teaching subjects such as economics, chemistry and mathematics to students through a foreign language.

In 2014, 24 schools jumped on the CLIL bandwagon. For next school year, 19 new schools have been added to the list, 15 of which are in East and West Flanders.

History and geography are the most popular subjects, with the English language in first place, followed by French.

"Language skills are important in our globalised society," says Flemish education minister Hilde Crevits. "Whether young people continue their education or enter the labour market, a good command of a foreign language only strengthens their position."
