More than 10,000 voter summons letters lost

10:03 21/05/2014

An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 Belgians have lost their voter summons letters for the upcoming elections on May 25. Almost all municipalities across the country have had to create duplicate letters, report Het Belang van Limburg and Het Gazet van Antwerpen. To be able to vote, residents must present both their summons letter and identity card.

Over the past few weeks, more and more concerned voters have been calling their municipality to report that they are unable to find their letter. The municipality of Antwerp, for example, reports up to 100 such calls per day.

Until Tuesday most municipalities simply sent a duplicate letter in the mail, but in the last days before the election, people are being asked to come and pick up their duplicates in person at their local town hall.

According to the municipalities, more voters are losing their summons letters due to too many campaign flyers cluttering their mailbox.
