Midges - how to get rid of them?

Question

Living on the 6th floor of 7-floor building, I have come home to find thousands of midges clustered in the corners and covering the windows of my balcony which I opened to see where they could be coming from. I haven't found a source but, from looking to the floors above and below, I seem to be the only one affected.

The balcony is reached through a door from my sitting room, and serves as good insulation in winter, but I really need to open the windows out there as it helps cool the living area in hot weather. Also, I want my children to have the extra play space in summer.

This infestation with midges means that we can neither use the balcony nor open the door to get some air.

I've never had to deal with this kind of problem before and would be very grateful if someone could advise me as to how to get rid of them.

Many thanks.

Assuming you want a way that isn't toxic to your children. A few ideas you could try using a Hoover if you have cylinder type have used they before for outbreak of fruit flies very quick. And then they are gone. . Not sure about midges but greenfly dislike water and detergent, so mix a spray bottle and spray them with that. . You could try buying anti mosquito candle and lighting that. If you need to open your window put a net up first.
