00:35 23/02/2016

The famous Brussels chip shop Maison Antoine was the centre of media attention last week after it was visited by German chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday. The chancellor stopped by the friterie for an order of Belgian chips. Her visit triggered longer queues than normal last weekend. Antonio, who works at Maison Antoine told his story to various newspapers: "Suddenly, They told me the chancellor was on her way."

The chip shop on Square Jourdan in the European district has always been popular, but the queues on Saturday and Sunday were longer than normal after the unexpected visit from Merkel, which quickly made international headlines.

"Around 18.00, I was informed that the chancellor would be coming...” Antonio told the newspapers. “She ordered 45 packs of chips for her entire staff, and wanted 40 toppings, mostly mayonnaise, but also sauce andalouse."

Merkel reportedly found the chips "amazing" and promised she would be back.
