mentoring

Does the concept of "mentoring" exist in Europe/Belgium? I know it's a big thing in organizations in the US.  Here, if it does exist, are there formal systems, or rather more informal? Could I ask someone to mentor me as I might in the US, or is there a different cultural way to go about it? TIA
