Manneken Pis “pees milk”
In Brussels yesterday, the famous statue of Manneken Pis was dressed up in traditional African rancher garb and made to “pee milk” instead of water in honour of World Milk Day. Initiator is the Belgian organisation Veterinarians Without Borders. The organisation’s aim is to draw attention to countries in Africa, where milk is an important source of food and income but its production remains insufficient, reports Het Laatste Nieuws. World Milk Day is an initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.
It’s not the first time that Veterinarians Without Borders dresses up Manneken Pis for World Milk Day. In 2010 Manneken Pis “peed milk” to draw attention to the important role milk has in the fight against hunger and poverty, especially in Mali. Due to lack of water and fodder, lack of veterinarians, bad roads and poor hygiene, there are many problems with milk in the country. Veterinarians Without Borders works to improve the health of livestock and quality of milk and to support trade.
