22:11 12/09/2017

A 19-year-old man has been charged with the murder of the mayor of Mouscron, Alfred Gadenne, who was found dead near his home on Monday night.

Gadenne, 71, had his throat slit as he was closing a municipal cemetery. Tournai-Mons public prosecutor Christian Henry said an emergency call was made from the cemetery shortly before 20.00 on Monday and the suspect was arrested at the scene. Investigators are gathering forensic evidence from the cemetery.

Sudpresse reports that the suspect's father had been dismissed from his job as a local civil servant in 2015 and committed suicide last year.

According to RTBF, the suspect appeared before an investigating judge in Mons briefly on Tuesday afternoon and will undergo psychiatric tests.

Gadenne had been mayor of Mouscron since 2006 and a member of the Walloon parliament since 2009.
