Major police manhunt after handbag snatch

15:38 08/09/2017

A federal police helicopter assisted numerous officers on the ground in pursuing a suspect after a 77 year-old woman had her bag snatched in Uccle on Thursday afternoon. The victim was walking along Chaussée Saint-Job when a scooter rider grabbed her handbag. A passing motorist came to her assistance and called the police who quickly tracked the mobile phone in her bag to Beersel train station.

Officers dispatched to the scene saw a man run along the railways tracks. Train services were delayed for the duration of the pursuit. Just over an hour after the theft, a suspect was located hiding behind a car. A man, born in 1992 and known to the police for similar offences, has been placed at the disposition of the prosecution service. The hand bag and mobile phone have been returned to the victim.

Police in Brussels rarely tries to follow on Burglary cases and all of a sudden involves helicopter and mobile phone tracking (doesn't it require a warrant?) to retrieve a purse? I'd like to believe that the victim was just a random elderly lady.

Well as it was the lady in questions phone and apparently a passing motorist call it in maybe they were just doing their job. Also the helicopter may have been in the area so maybe why it was involved

I hope you're right. And as much as I do not wish to need their help, if I actually do - I hope to be served like the lady rather than like I was the day when someone broke into my garage.

There must be some proportionality though, I can't see how a bag theft justifies a helicopter intervention, delaying train services etc.
