living in Diest

Question

Hello

Just a quick question if anyone has any experience of what it's like to live in Diest?
We currently live in Vilvoorde and I work at the airport - we may need to consider moving soon as my partner has just found a job in Borgloon and it's too far for him to drive between Vilvoorde and Borgloon every day.
Thus, we're thinking of moving to Diest as it's in the middle. I don't drive and would have to take the train to work.

Is anyone here from Diest? How does it compare to Vilvoorde / Leuven / Hasselt?

Many thanks for any assistance!

I have family in Vilvoorde and I am familiar with both Diest and Hasselt though I have never lived in any of them.
Diest is very much 'small town Flanders' with a population of around 20,000 whereas Hasselt has around 70,000.
Your train trip would be around 15 minutes shorter from Diest though there are 2 different routes from Hasselt so, effectively, twice as many trains.
Borgloon is obviously much nearer to Hasselt.
Another place to consider might be Sint Truiden - bigger than Diest but smaller than Hasselt.
Hope this helps.
