Lithuanians in Brussels to celebrate 100 years of independence

10:43 13/02/2018

Lithuanians all around the world are celebrating the 100th anniversary of their country's independence this Friday (16 February) - including a special day of events here in Brussels.

The Embassy of Lithuania will be holding events for the 3,000 Lithuanians to come together and reflect on this centenary, as well as inviting all Belgians to join in on the celebrations.

"We are so proud of our Lithuanian community which is very active," says the embassy's chargée d'affaires, Aistė Šaduikienė. "For all Lithuanians around the world, this is the centenary. Many people attach meaning to the numbers, and it is one more reason to say ‘I am proud of my country."

On Friday, the Manneken Pis will be dressed in the national costume of Lithuania beginning at 12.30. Then, at 18.30 at the Cinquantenaire Park, there will be a laser show of the symbols and colours of the restored Lithuania that will be displayed on the arch.

It may be technicality, but 100th anniversary of independence is not the same as 100 years of independence. For that, the independence would have to be uninterrupted, which is not the case as we all know.
