Language to use in giving notice to employer

I have a fixed term employment contract and want to leave before the end of it. In writing the letter of notice to my employer, do I need to use any specific language?

I know the notice letter will be valid from the first of the next month, and that I should send them a copy via registered mail. Any other advice appreciated!
