joining the Belgium health system

Question

My wife and I, Americans, plan to retire in Belgium next year. I understand that health care is based on contributions from work, but how would a non-working ex-pat join the system? Specified monthly or other periodic contributions? based on income? Thanks. Richard

J.

First things first, how do you plan to establish legal residency in Belgium?

Someone who lives here legally but doesn't fall into any of the normal categories (employee, self-employed...) can pay into the social security system as a "resident". Fees are then based on income and go up to a maximum of about €600 per quarter.
