Ixelles tackles feral cat problem

10:30 05/08/2014

The Brussels municipality of Ixelles has established a set of rules for people who feed feral cats, and mapped out specified feeding posts so that the cats can be sterilised more easily, reports Brusselnieuws.be.

The municipality already has 10 candidates who are responsible for regularly feeding the stray cats. After signing a charter that they will respect the laws on public cleanliness, the volunteers receive a card that allows them to legally feed the cats at the approved sites, as indicated by an official sign with a cat logo.

"With this map, we can identify the people who give the cats food and check the feeding zones in order to track and eventually sterilise the cats," said Delphine Bourgeois, Alderwoman for Europe in Ixelles and known animal rights activist.

Ixelles plans to carry out pro-sterilisation campaigns for feral cats year-round.
