First Brussels exhibition of Lastenia Canayo, a pioneer of Peru’s Indigenous contemporary art movement and a guardian of Kené, a sacred artistic tradition passed down through generations of Shipibo-Conibo women.

Lastenia Canayo, born in Ucayali in 1962, is one of the pioneers of the Indigenous contemporary art movement. Her name in her native language is “Pecon Quena,” which means “the one who calls the colors.”

From an early age, she learned from her mother and grandmother the Kené, a traditional women’s art technique that connects with nature through the use of sacred plants.

She is a member of the Shipibo-Conibo, an Amazonian community deeply connected to the jungle’s biodiversity. Inspired by her community’s cosmovision and guided by visions, Lastenia conceived a series of anthropomorphic entities that safeguard the plants, animals, and elements of the jungle.

Lastenia has participated in art exhibitions in France, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Brazil, Colombia, the United States, and Mexico.

This event is made possible thanks to the support of the Embassy of Peru in Belgium.
