Inheriting proprty questions

Question

We are inheriting some property in the family.
How is the valuation for inheritance tax purposes?

How does it compare to market value?
Does it matter if the property is kept or sold immediately?

How many times do you have to pay registration duty if you sell it?

Other things to be aware of?

(This is all internal Belgium, The property is already partially inherited. A sale might be to another heir)

Seek professional legal advice. A few €100 spent on a lawyer now could save thousands in tax or mis-valuations.

The only person who can really answer this is the notaries who is handling the estate.

I don't agree with ANON there - you'd have to know far more of the gory details to be able to say that the person handling the estate is the best person to talk to. Family money issues can get very nasty very quickly, and the notaire involved may already be representing one of the parties, which is why, given the rather sparse information that the OP has given, it would be wise to spend a little bit of time with someone who understands the law enough to find out and tell you what your best interests are.
