Identifying an animal call

Several times over the last three or four months, I have heard a strange call late at night - very late, between midnight and 3am. It sounds bait like a puppy barking- bark-like, but medium-high pitch. The sounds always comes from a region in the backyard - there are large trees and slopes back there, so I think it's a wild animal. Any idea what it could be?
