How to clean a carpet at home?

Hi!

We have a black carpet at our home and its a bit dirty now. The dust has settled in. The vaccum cleaner doesn't clean it thoroughly. Is there a better way to clean it at home? Any cleaning liquids that are available specially for this. If yes, please also let me know which brand and where can it be brought.

I went to Brico and rented a "shampuinueuse" (not sure of the spelling) and shampooed my carpets. It cost me around 18euros for a half day and 8 euros for the product. It really worked. I'm happy with the results.
