Households made up of both migrants and natives make largest contribution to economy

09:27 19/02/2014

According to a report by the OECD, the annual average net contribution of a mixed Belgian- and foreign-born household was €16,830 in 2013. That’s 83% more than the average net contribution made by a fully Belgian-born household (€9,159).

The numbers come from the OECD report “International Migration Outlook 2013”, which calculated average net contributions, or the difference between annual tax payments and social benefits received.

The report also points out that net contributions coming from immigrant households remain positive at €5,560. This is not the case in countries like France, Germany or Poland, where net contributions are in the negative.

Belgium also had the largest difference when it came to comparing immigrant households originating from rich countries – OECD member countries – and poor countries. On average, Belgian immigrant households of rich-country origin contribute €6,000 more than those of poor-country origin.
