Help needed re; Car

Hi all,
My 8-9 year old car broke down over the weekend, we got it taken to a local Mechanic, french speaking only. When he checked it out he said the engine is gone and it would cost too much to get it fixed, way more than its worth. He gave me a number to get someone to just take it away. As we do not know any mechanic here and have no relationship with one, i feel this is my only option. Now i know the car is not worth fixing but is this my only option as he may give me nothing for it. Any advice of the best route to take.
