height of the hedge

Question

need to know according Belgium law the max height between neighbors.
And where to find the law dealing with this .
Thank you

Mikek1300gt

I would not be at all surprised if rules like this varied between communes, so that's the place to go ask. Even if I knew of a rule for where I live, it may not apply to you.

I remember dealing with this when we moved into our house and I'm sure Mike is right. It depends on the commune and also on whether the hedge is on the property line or completely inside one of the properties.
Our neighbour has a hedge well over 2.5 metres high which blocks the sun from a part of our garden but it is completely on his property so we have to live with it.

Yes - Speak to your commune. The rules are different everywhere.

Kassierstsmper isn't correct you don't have to live with it, even if it's on their land it depend how near the border it is. the commune will have rules in mine it's 1m (or maybe 1.5) at the border and at that height until it's more that 1m from edge I think, it's clearly there people ignore it but ask yourself if it's worth a disputed with the neighbour? Have you tried politely speaking to them about it? Is it all of your garden or just a small part? So first ask the commune to tell you the rules for your area then have a friendly chat

@CC_R
You clearly know more about the rules in my commune than do the staff in the gemeentehuis.
Nevertheless we were told that the maximum permitted height of a hedge or fence which sits on the property line is 2 metres but, if it is exclusively on one property and so long as there is no overhang. we had to live with it. Any overhang can be cut off by us. The neighbour is careful that there isn't an overhang and we decided that, as the previous owner of our house had accepted it, we would wait and see. In the event it has not been as intrusive as we first thought it might be.
As others have said, and like so many things in Belgium, it depends on the commune and, if no-one complains, nothing will be done.
