Green light for 'tram-bus' to Brussels airport

The Flemish government has approved €90 million of funding for a "tram-bus" project linking Heysel with Brussels airport from 2019.

The new route will pass through Vilvoorde and then follow the Brussels ring to Zaventem. "Laying tram tracks takes time," said Flanders' mobility minister Ben Weyts. "A tram-bus provides a quicker alternative."

The Flemish public transport authority De Lijn carried out its first test run of the new tram-bus this summer. It can use existing tram lines, while having the flexibility of buses in other sections.

Weyts said there were also plans for a full tram service from Brussels North station to the airport.
