Gigantic cave system discovered in Belgium

10:35 02/05/2014

Cave explorers have discovered a huge cave system in Sprimont, in the Belgian province of Liège. The caves are divided into a number of large halls and galleries with a river running through them.

The actual discovery was made 1.5 years ago during quarry works, but the news is only now going public because of negotiations between the explorers and the quarry owners.

Further exploration of the giant cave system, called Noû Bleû, is of great interest to a number of parties. The University of Liège, for example, is after its “valuable geological and sedimentological information," according to speleologists from the university. "The cave system contains rare and very precise information unique to this region. And its geological data has been very well preserved over a long period of time."

Mayor of Sprimont, Claude Ancion, dreams of turning the caves into a popular tourist attraction like the Caves of Han, in Namur province. He admits, however, that it won’t be easy because the caves fall under private property.
