Ghent ranked best Belgian university

19:37 15/08/2016

The University of Ghent, like last year, was the highest ranked Belgian university in the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released on Monday. The University of Ghent ranks 62nd out of 500 universities, winning nine places compared to last year. The world's top 10 universities this year were again dominated by US institutions, with Harvard University in the lead.

The ranking was prepared by the Chinese Jia Tong University in Shanghai. The scoring takes into account the number of Nobel Prizes won by alumni, the number of academic awards for professors, the number of scientific papers published and the number of papers included in the Science Citation Index.

Topping the list of Belgium's best universities are the University of Ghent (62) and KU Leuven (93) in the top 100. These are followed by the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (between 151 and 200), the ULB (151-200), the University of Antwerp (201-300), the VUB (201-300) and the University of Liège (301-400).
