Gatz to invest €12 million in Gaasbeek Castle
Flemish culture minister Sven Gatz is to free up €12 million for renovation works to the castle in Gaasbeek, located just outside of Brussels, reports brusselnieuws.be.
The entire 50-hectare site around the castle will undergo a makeover, including various buildings and pavilions dating from the 17th- to 19th centuries. The castle itself will be made accessible to persons with limited mobility and fitted with two large lifts. The renovation project is expected to take about five years to complete.
"The public should not expect spectacular architectural changes, but we will tackle all the buildings on the site and restore them," says castle director Luc Vanackere. "Gaasbeek Castle will then be able to compete with the best castle and heritage sites in Europe."
Gatz announced on Thursday that he would invest a total of €42 million in cultural heritage projects across Brussels and Flanders.
