'Fridge for all' opens in Saint-Gilles
Volunteers have turned the garage of a Saint-Gilles townhouse into a drop-in food bank - with five fridges filled with donated food for anyone who needs it.
The "fridge for all" can be found at Rue Arthur Diderich 34, and follows a similar experiment on Boulevard Lambermont in Schaerbeek which has been running since 2O14.
Unlike the Schaerbeek fridge, the Saint-Gilles version is not accessible 24/7 and, during the opening hours, is under supervision.
"Anyone can come here to help themselves in a responsible way," said organiser Nathalie Vanderpas. "They will be greeted with a smile by our volunteers."
The project was inaugurated on Tuesday. Charities and individuals have pledged to regularly pop by to deposit new food.
The Schaerbeek open fridge has been a success, according to non-profit association Corvia which runs it. Last year, 23 tonnes of food were consumed and the fridge is used by 80 people in an average day.
