French-speaking community regrets Brussels' decision on Cirque Royal

15:13 17/11/2016

The French-speaking culture minister in Brussels, Alda Greoli and her colleague Joëlle Milquet have reacted disappointed in the decision of the municipal college to hand over the management of Cirque Royal to Brussels Expo instead of Botanique, reports Bruzz. The decision is "primarily based on a focus on events rather than culture," minister Greoli responded in parliament.

The ministers fear that the transfer of management will have a “negative cultural impact" on the Botanique, which organises a number of its events at Cirque Royal. Greoli added that they are still waiting for the city council to confirm the decision.

Milquet, meanwhile, is urging party members to appeal the decision on Monday in the city council. The decision is an act of "government imperialism,” according to Milquet, and an expression of “great contempt for the main actor in the Francophone musical scene, Botanique”.

She also points out the low occupancy rate of the venues currently operated by Brussels Expo, such as Palais 12 and La Madeleine.
