Four in 10 Brussels hospital patients from outside region

On average, about 40% of the patients in Brussels hospitals do not live in the Brussels-Capital Region, reports brusselnieuws.be according to recent figures from the Brussels Observatory for Health and Welfare. Two-thirds of the patients staying in the region's hospitals come from a municipality in the Brussels periphery.
While the proximity to Brussels certainly plays a role, there are other factors at play, according to researcher Peter Verduyckt of the Observatory: "People come here to seek the type of care that they can not find elsewhere."
There are also large differences between hospitals, he points out, with some private hospitals reporting that nearly half of their patients are from outside Brussels. The Iris network of public and academic hospitals, by comparison, has about 20% non-Brussels residents for patients.
Approximately one percent of the Brussels hospital patients come from abroad.
