Football match

Question

Hello all,

My country has qualified for the world cup for the first time. I would like to go and support them, but I have to go to a public space as I don't have a tv in my flat. However my problem is that my country is very small and I do not have many countrymen here in Bruselas so unfortunately I have to go to see the match alone. My plan is to go to a pub, but my concern is that since I am alone and the team they are playing against have many supporters here, I will stand out a bit. I am a bit worried that if I support my team and the pub is rowdy, I might get into problems..

I have therefore been thinking of that I will be wearing my country's jersey, but on top of that I will wear the other country's jersey as well alongst with a scarf to be sure nobody sees the team that I am really supporting. I will then blend in with the other team's fans and pretend to be one of them, but silently cheer if my team is doing well.

My concern is, maybe if can not conceal my support(let's say if my team scores) and I get caught, do you think it would be safe for me? I don't know if there is a lot of hooliganism in Belgium, but I am wondering if there will there be a lot of police in the streets(I plan to go to the center) if I need their protection in the worst case.

Thank you all and good luck to your country if they are at the world cup !

J

You should find that the overwhelming majority of events are just what it's supposed to be - a real celebration of football.
You can quite safely go to a Belgium match, and you'll be welcome in the opposition shirt. You're more likely to get someone buying you a beer than scowling at you.

No matter how small your country, there's going to be at least a few of you there! If you score, as J notes above, you're more likely to find that half the pub buys you a drink.
