Flemish Tutor / Language Classes

The language is dutch and the best starting point for learning it is her huis van her Nederlands which will be able to give you details of available courses in adult education schools called cvo s. In Brussels, learning dutch is free for residents.

I took courses at the huis van het NL and for the price (free), it is pretty good; sometimes you do have bad teachers, so I repeated the level because I wasn't satisfied with what I learned; nonetheless, it is really a good starting point to get your dutch going. Only problem is, courses do fill fast!

There are other schools which you can also attend but you do have to pay and they don't fill up since they aren't free; nonetheless, I think it used to be less than 100 euros per 9 week lessons 3 times a week. This is a few years back so not sure about the current prices.

Communes give free lessons as long as you pass. If you fail, you pay for it. Leuven, Vilvoorde has. You can check Sterebeek also, I do not know. Also VUB cvo has free classes. You pay for the books only.

Not correct about communes giving free lessons. Communes don't give lessons

Adult education can be funded by a commune or gemeente and what you pay depends on many factors.

There are 1000s of places to learn, as you don't state where you live, you could get 100s of irrelevant recommended places to learn.

YOUR commune might not give free lessons but I promise you I had free lessons from mine. And there was no question of pass or fail.

The fact you got free Dutch lessons from where you live does not mean it's free everywhere as you stated. As stated above for example, in the CVOs in Brussels, it's free for residents, but in EPFC in Brussels, you pay still. It is entirely dependent on location and who funds.

In addition, unemployed /disabled can get language lessons paid for, working people can buy "language checks", many ways of reducing costs.

Two of my friends followed free courses in Vilvoorde and Leuven, which were free as long as they pass. I think communes were involved somehow, if lessons were not directly in the commune. Communes organise language tables though. For ex. in Kraainem commune. You need to do some research regarding this.

I can recommend a friend of mine - she used to teach at CVO a few years ago, and she still takes a few private lessons now. If you leave your email address here, she said she'll get in touch with you. I've done group lessons at CVO - they're good, but slow.
