Five-year-old girl injured in Schaerbeek hit-and-run

20:02 07/01/2018

A five-year-old girl and her father have been seriously injured in a hit-and-run at the entrance to a Schaerbeek playground - the third incident of its kind in the area in recent months.

A car mounted the pavement on the corner of Avenue des Azalées and Avenue Paul Deschanel on Sunday afternoon. After hitting the man and his daughter, the driver and a passenger ran away. One of the car's occupants was caught and arrested.

Schaerbeek mayor Bernard Clerfayt said the two victims were not in a critical condition. "The two people in the car ran away, taking the vehicle registration plates with them," he said on Facebook. "Witnesses ran after them and one of them was caught by the Neptunium swimming pool."

In November, 28-year-old journalist Stephanie Verbraekel was killed on a pedestrian crossing on nearby Chaussée de Haecht by a car which failed to stop. Later that month, a 56-year-old woman was seriously injured in another hit-and-run on a pedestrian crossing on Rue de Jérusalem.

Would be great if they were banned from driving for life, but that probably won't happen and probably wouldn't stop them from driving again anyway. Interesting that they were equipped to remove the plates before running off. Serial hit and run specialists? It would also be nice if the authorities capture the second person and actually do arrest and hold both of them for a change.
